Here are a couple photos that Joe Cook posted on his group Cook's Horror Central, from the hands of special effects artist Louis Lazzara who worked on multiple Friday the 13th films (III & V) as well as multiple Nightmare on Elm Street (1, 5, Freddy's Dead, Freddy's Nightmares) films as well as an extensive resume including Halloween H20, Teen Wolf Too and The Addams Family.
I think a lot of us would agree that the makeup effects in A New Beginning aren't up to par with Parts I - IV, but I think a lot of them suffered cuts (film, not skin - DUH!) more than anything. Most of the effects were cut (and believe this - more footage was cut from A New Beginning than was cut from The New Blood!) and the effects that weren't cut, suffered vital editing to "sell" the gag.
Like Tom Savini said, part of selling the gag is distracting the eyes and mind – much like a magic trick. A New Beinning had it's magic removed as suggested by the loathsome MPAA.

NEVER SEEN THE BOTTOM ONES!
ReplyDeleteMe neither. Awesome shots.
DeleteVery cool find, once again my good man. I've seen the top one but that is form a slightly nicer angle with much superior/original clarity. I love that old school pre-CGI make up F/X artists have a lot more involvement in retro special features now. I just got in my Halloween franchise blu ray boxset and some of the more interesting special features are of John Carl Beachler (though I DO find Friday part VII a huge, overrated shut fest, though, aside form the late Susan Jenifer Sullivan's role as one of the better bitches in the series its a shit house flick) involvement was talking about his contributing to Halloweens' parts IV & VI. And yeah I'll stop here since I know that you're not really into the Shape franchise.

Yes, I have seen one similr to the top, too... different angle. In the one above you can see his head is off the ground too.
DeleteI like This Shot ! It Funny Because At The last Moment Louis L. Ran Back And Gave Joey's Severed Arm That Melted Lump Of A Candy Bar Monstrosity to Help pass the Gist!.. love It!
DeleteSame here both online and back issues of Fangoria before I had to sell off all of mine too, ect. Yup I also noticed the severed head on a different level in the top photo, too. Its very cool even if David Miller from NOES Part 1 and Friday V along with Reel EFX that particular time did a fairly shitty job. I have always presumed that a lot of it was in its lighting & editing. As we all know Parts 2, V and VII suffered the most cuts, ultimately, and no offense but the late/great (meh?) Danny Steinmann, as a director's background was the old school grindhouse east coast era of 35mm adult films, and to be honest int he documentary I feel the editor of Parts V & VI was right: more or less his mind was on tits 'n ass the whole time; not that I don't blame him, but aside from Debi-Sue Voorhees I always thought that Friday 3-D and The Final Chapter had much hotter girls in it.Just a personal opinion. I think that Douglas J. White from Part 3-D plus Savini and his mini crew having their own make-up camper on set for previous installments helped greatly to improve the effects I felt.
