Some more foreign greatness from Brandon Middleton. Today it is an Argentinian PAL VHS of Friday the 13th (1980). The tagline is a piece of broken-English greatness: "Beg Just Be a Nightmare."

Portuguese VHS Covers

Here's a collection of VHS clamshells from sinemamkena, from what I presume to be Brazil since the language is Portuguese. One of the things I did dig about the Paramount releases is that they took the liberty of teasing the hell out of us fans by including scenes cut from the movies on the back of the tapes.

I thought I would enjoy this more than I am...

As a kid of the 1980's- being able to actually rent videos at a legitimate mom & pop video store- you'd think seeing all of the Blockbusters going out ob business would give me more happiness. I can say that those video rental stores were my Grindhouses, and Hwy 41 in High Springs, Fl (which had my rental store of my choice) was my 42nd Street.

When Blockbuster started to infiltrate the small towns (after it had taken over the cities) pretty much every independent video rental store went out of business. Thankfully, very select few independently owned ones did stay and survive, but those are few and far between. I can never express how much I hated Blockbuster for doing that to the video rental industry.

After re-organizing my VHS collection I noticed that a lot of titles that I owned had very, very similar covers. Most of them were all on different distribution labels so it most definitely not the distribution label copying itself over and over again. Most of these covers have a very common motif- we see the killer and his weapon very close up in the foreground and way off into the distance we wee a house and sometimes in between a victim or two. Some of the more known movies that have this on the VHS box art are Home Sweet Home, Horror House On Highway 5 and Alone In The Dark to name a few. Here are some scans of a handful that I could find-- there are many others.

Top 10 movies on VHS that I would love to see on DVD?

Some of the most often questions I generally get from my YouTube channel is "recommend me a movie not on DVD" or "what movie not on DVD do you wish was?" Ideally, if a movie is not given proper DVD treatment (i.e. 16x9 anamorphic transfer, Dolby 5.1, commentary, uncut if available, etc) then I really am content with it just being on VHS. The only downside of the VHS format is that it deteriorates over time and in 25 years all you are left with is a fuzzy rolling picture. Now with the technology we have to back up those old VHS tapes to DVDr again leaves me with that same notion... if you are not going to give these films proper DVD treatment then fuck off! My pet peeve is shelling out $11.99 for a DVD and to realize that it's nothing more than a VHS rip on a DVD-- fuck, I can do that myself for fifty cents!

So, lately I have been doing a series of videos on YouTube of VHS tapes that I have that I'd like to see have a proper DVD treatment. So far I have chosen 50- 5 per video- but I will narrow my choices down to 10 HORROR and give you guys a brief description why.
