Jason's mask donning- epic or cheesy?

Shelly (Larry Zerner) and his beloved gag hockey mask
So, there has been a lot of debate about how Jason donned his infamous hockey mask in Friday The 13th 2009. I personally thought it was a tad bit on the cheesy side how he checked himself out in the mirror afterward, yet a lot of people think it was the best donning to date.

I still say the way he obtained the mask in Part III is, and will always be the most infamous and epic. It's really hard to top that. Here's my rankings:

#4) Jason takes a hockey mask from Jim on the house boat: What are the odds that there is yet one more hockey mask replica with an axe crack? What are the chances that mask will be in the same place as Jason?

#3) Tommy Jarvis gives Jason back his mask: I should have rated this last because I am not a huge Jason Lives fan at all. Jason's hockey mask was odd shaped and of course for some odd reason Tommy has this mask? Or is it a shitty replica?

#2) Jason finds a hockey mask in an old shed: After Jason kills a horny man in a shed he finds a hockey mask, dons it and checks himself out. I reckon this could have been much cheesier, but at least Jason didn't raise his arms and breathe in and out deep like Kane Hodder.

#1) Jason kills Shelly and steals his prop mask: This will always be the best donning, this came out of left fiend and I bet nobody expected it much. It's more characteristic of a killer like Jason to nonchalantly put on a mask and go about his business.

  1. At first, I thought the new "donning of the mask" was anti-climactic. But, the more I have thought about it, the more I am okay with it. It was subtle, and we get to SEE Jason finding and putting the mask on, which we don't in Part III. Who knows if Jason checked his new look out or not when he got it from Shelly. Maybe he looked at his reflection in an old wash tub back then, too. :)

I really am looking forward to seeing this movie again, maybe in theaters, but definitely on DVD. I think it may just grow on me over time.

  2. You're not impartial to Part 3 or anything, right? :)

  3. I like the donning of the mask in 2009. The thing I liked most about it is that it took place in the barn- which I thought was an excellent nod to Part 3. I didn't think it was cheesy that he "glanced" in the mirror. He wasn't "primping", just seeing if he liked it, or maybe checking to make sure it covered all of his deformed face.

Who knows what he did after he first put on the mask in Part 3.

We never got to see it......

I see nothing "left field" about the donning of the mask in Part 3 - unless your name is Vera.

It's was obvious to me as a 9 year old when I first saw Jason step out on that dock that it was Jason and not Shelly.

I sincerely doubt that the Miner's attempt was to fool the audience in that scene. Quite the opposite in fact. As the audience - you know it's Jason. Only Vera does not.

  4. Just wanted to add that the Part 3 mask donning is still my personal favorite. I think it's a much more effective scene overall.

But I don't see anything wrong with the 2009 donning. I would never have wanted them to do it like they did in Part 3.

You gotta admit - although it's visually impressive- Vera was quite dumb to mistake Shelly for Jason in that scene. The two are built nothing alike.

I don't think audiences these days would be as forgiving if a scene like that were made again...

  5. I think what was effective about the Part III donning was that we did not know what happened to Shelly. Yeah he could have died, he also could have dropped the mask when he went into the barn, so it sort of set up Shelly's death later. Yes, I am partial to Part III

  6. Part 3 is my personal favorite in the series.

Yes - at that point we do not know what the heck happened to Shelly!
